Energy System

GREEN SOLAR ENERGY

Photovoltaic Panels
Photovoltaic panels on the roof convert sunlight into electricity.

GREEN HYDROGEN GENERATION

Electrolyser + Compressor
Excess solar energy is used to convert desalinated sea water into green hydrogen (H2) gas. The gas is then compressed to 300 bar.

LONG-TERM H2 STORAGE

Carbon Tanks
Compressed hydrogen is stored in carbon tanks as long-term energy storage on board.

SHORT-TERM BATTERY STORAGE

Li-ion batteries
Small Li-ion batteries serve as short-term electricity storage used for propulsion and onboard energy usage.

PROPULSION

Fuel cell electric engines
Powered by two electric engines (one per hull), cruising is emission-free and silent.

ELECTRICITY PRODUCTION

Fuel Cells
Fuel cells convert the hydrogen back to electricity whenever energy is needed for propulsion or living onboard. The only emissions are pure water and thermal heat used to cover onboard hot water supply and heating.

The Technology

A powerful zero-emissions catamaran

We understand that true freedom does not accept compromises. That is why we built AQUON One with a holistic approach. The solar yacht makes its own renewable energy on board, can store that energy over long periods of time, and powers its two fuel cell electric engines free from any emissions. The smart catamaran is built to be extremely energy efficient and offers true independence from on-shore energy supply.

State-of-art communication technology

AQUON One is a place to live, work, and stay connected without constraints. The smart ship is equipped with modern communication technology and high-speed internet that powers IOT-enabled devices.

Solar panels

With 64 m2 of monocrystalline solar panels, AQUON One makes its own renewable energy on board at an output of more than 75 kWh/day in summertime. Thus, this solar yacht can be energy autarch, providing more independence from on-shore electricity supply.

Electric tender

When cruising, the electric tender is pulled up and tucked inbetween the two hulls, organically forming part of the catamaran hull to increase aerodynamics. While at anchor, the electric tenders offer the freedom to explore the area, using the green solar energy produced on board AQUON One.

Zero-emission drive system

AQUON One’s two electric engines (one per hull) are powered by fuel cells which turn the stored green hydrogen into electricity – the only emission in this process is hot water vapor which is used on board for hot water generation. There is no diesel fumes or vibrations from a diesel generator. The electric engines allow silent cruising, independent from on-shore electricity supply.

Automated window shading

Automated window shading is one of the many components of the smart energy system that make AQUON One highly energy efficient.

Optimized hull

The optimized hull of AQUON One achieves the perfect balance between energy efficiency, speed, comfort and space, safety and seaworthiness. It is designed for optimum efficiency at a cruising speed of 6 knots, resulting in a range of over 800 nautical miles.

Waste and black water management

AQUON One separates black and grey water and has an on-board water treatment system. The eco-yacht also sets new standards in waste management.

The solar yacht makes its own renewable energy on board, can store that energy over long periods of time, and powers its two fuel cell electric engines free from any emissions. Why hydrogen?

Sustainable

When produced from renewable energy sources, hydrogen is a sustainable energy carrier eliminating emissions and noise.

Long-term energy storage

Unlike commonly used batteries, hydrogen can store energy over longer periods of time, even across seasons.

Independence

AQUON One gains independence from shore and is self-sufficient. It produces its own off-grid energy through solar power and generates hydrogen on board

Increased cruising range

Hydrogen is much lighter than fossil fuels or batteries, increasing the efficiency of our electric yacht and thus the cruising range.

Zero-emission

The only exhaust from AQUON One’s fuel cells is clean water vapor making the propulsion completely emission-free.

Silence

Onboard fuel cells power the electric motors silently, reducing noise pollution for the marine environment and providing additional comfort for people on board.

Design Inspired by Nature

“AQUON One is made for living. It is a loft at sea without compromise. We have imagined a place to enjoy the moment, to spend quiet time away from the rush and with loved ones. The design itself was inspired by silence and the elegance of a manta ray, creating a feeling of harmony and ease…”
